WSJ: Overnight attack targeted convoy smuggling Iranian weapons from Iraq to Syria, at least 15 killed
Anonymous allegations claim Israel carried out ‘mysterious’ airstrikes
Overnight airstrikes on Tuesday targeted a convoy of vehicles allegedly smuggling Iranian weapons from Iraq to Syria, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The Associated Press reported that about 15 trucks in the convoy were hit and, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 15 people were killed.
Iraqi officials told the WSJ the convoy was believed to be transporting munitions and missiles, as well as a legal shipment of fuel from Iran to Lebanon.
The convoy strike took place near Abu Kamal – a border town where militant groups linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps smuggle weapons.
Anonymous sources claim Israel was behind the strike, however, the Israeli military declined to comment on the incident.
Both Israel and the United States have reportedly conducted airstrikes against Iranian targets in Syria in the past.
