The Gaza Strip has gained a prominent spot in worldwide news coverage after the Hamas terror organization, which has controlled the coastal enclave since 2006, launched a brutal attack on southern Israel's border towns on Oct. 7 that left over 1,200 people dead, more than 240 abducted and started the war.

“But what do we know about this strange piece of land?”

That was the question posed by ALL ISRAEL NEWS correspondent Rotem Magen in her interview with Emeritus Prof. Gideon Biger after attending his recent lecture about Gaza.

The lecture was part of a larger initiative aimed at educating the large numbers of evacuated residents from the Gaza and Lebanon borders but also the broader public.

Before retiring Biger served as a professor of Historical and Political Geography at Tel Aviv University and wrote extensively about the historical borders of the land known as “Palestine.”

During the lecture about the Gaza Strip, Biger spoke about the history of the region and how the land was formed. He explained how Great Britain and Egypt contributed to its development in 1906 and discussed what the historical definition of a “Palestinian” is.

He also shared his perspective and offered a possible solution for the future of the Gaza Strip and its residents after Israel's war with Hamas ends.

Following the lecture, the attendees expressed how grateful they were to learn more about the history of the land and the current conflict.

“Now when everything happened, we want to learn more about Gaza and know about it much more, so it was very interesting for us,” one of the younger audience members told ALL ISRAEL NEWS correspondent Magen

Another older attendee said he appreciated the lecture and noted that he is technically a “Palestinian,” born before the State of Israel was founded in 1948.

Back then, he told Magen, everyone was called a Palestinian – Arabs as well as Jews.
