Three leading Israeli universities rank among Top 100 in global listing
These universities have held their Top 100 position for several years in a row
Three leading Israeli institutions once again appeared on the Top 100 list of universities worldwide for 2023.
The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot improved its ranking this year, moving up to 67th, compared to 83rd place last year.
The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa also improved its standing, ranking 78th this year, up from 83rd last year, and 94th in 2021. In addition, the prestigious Israeli institution was ranked 4th among European technical universities as it celebrated its 100th anniversary.
The Shanghai Ranking uses the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) to establish its list, which has been ranking universities for the last two decades.
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem dropped to 85th position from a ranking of 77th in 2022. It was the only university among the three that made the Top 100 while declining in standing.
ARWU universities are ranked based on several criteria, such as the number of Nobel Laureates, Fields Medalists and how often research articles from the universities are cited in scholarly literature.
Technion Institute President Prof. Uri Sivan said, “The presence of three Israeli academic institutions within the world's top 100 universities is a testament to the excellence of Israeli academia and science. This achievement fills us with pride.”
All three universities have been in the news recently for developments, particularly in the fields of medical treatments and biomedical engineering, which is a hot field of research in Israeli institutions.
The high level of scientific research and innovation at Israeli universities has attracted the attention of other universities as well.
Earlier this summer, a group of presidents and chancellors representing historically Black colleges and Universities (HBCUs) toured Israel, where they visited Israeli institutions.
What they saw impressed the leaders, and several signed memoranda of understanding and study-abroad research programs between their institutions and Israeli universities, intended to increase knowledge exchange and joint research projects.
The group of HBCU leaders toured several Israeli universities, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Technion, Tel Aviv University, MIGAL Galilee Research Institute and the Volcani Center.
Dr. Harold Martin, Jr., chancellor at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, said the experience of visiting Israeli universities was enlightening.
“Prior to our visit, I would not have identified Israel as a leading technological and innovative nation. I leave with a very different perspective, having interacted with so many outstanding universities thriving in areas of innovation and technology that are providing outstanding graduates to leading global technology companies here in Israel and around the world,” Martin said.
