On Monday afternoon, Marco Rubio was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Secretary of State.

The vote was 99-0, uniting both Republican and Democrat senators.

Rubio is the first cabinet nominee of the Trump administration to be confirmed.

Ending a fourteen-year term as a senator for the State of Florida, Rubio replaces Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Blinken’s appointment by Biden had marked the second time in U.S. history that a Jewish person was selected as Secretary of State, after Henry Kissinger served in that role under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

As Reuters reported, “Rubio is the first person of Hispanic origin to serve” in this role.

Rubio is a vocal supporter of Israel, and has said he wants Israel to “destroy every element of Hamas they can get their hands on.”

In examining the various threats America faces, Rubio has expressed the view that the Chinese Communist Party constitutes the “threat that will define this century.”

He has also indicated that he will follow Trump’s lead in efforts to negotiate peace between Ukraine and Russia.

While emphasizing that he is “not on Russia’s side,” Rubio said that “unfortunately the reality of it is that the way the war in Ukraine is going to end is with a negotiated settlement.”

Regarding what he thinks such a settlement will look like, Rubio has said that that “there’s no way Russia takes all of Ukraine,” but that “there’s no way Ukraine is also going to push these people back to all the way they were on the eve of the invasion,” Newsweek reported.

While Rubio enjoyed unanimous support in his confirmation, other cabinet selections, such as Pete Hegseth and Tulsi Gabbard, have faced a tougher road to being confirmed.
