Lebanese Druze party leader urges Shi’ites to 'seek peace with Israel'
In Lebanon, the Druze have a significant political role as they are one of the recognized sects in Lebanon’s sectarian political system. Wiam Wahhab, a Lebanese Druze party leader and former minister, was recently interviewed on Lebanese TV on a show called Whala’ Shu where he surprised many viewers by calling for "peace with Israel."
While typically one to outwardly support the Iranian regime and its proxies, he seemed to carefully tow the line and called for an embracing of peace with Israel. “I advise the Shi’ites to go to peace with Israel and let’s all live happily,” Wahhab said.
While the anchor of the show, Georges Salibi, seemed perplexed by this admonition to live peacefully with their Israeli neighbors, Wahhab was asked why he was suddenly calling for such an agreement.
“The nation does not want to fight. Let’s follow the majority... The Muslim Brotherhood, which is Iran’s ally – they don’t want to fight...” Wahhab responded.
Additionally, the Lebanese politician did not hold back any critical remarks toward the Syrian Assad regime. He claimed that “Assad managed to disappoint, starve, and steal from all of his supporters, and he also relied on the Russians and neglected his own army.”
The former supporter of Assad was questioned by show’s host regarding his previous alliance to the Syrian leader to which he responded, “I will kill and make a deal with the devil in order to protect my family if needed.”
According to The Jerusalem Post, last month Wahhab spoke out against Hezbollah, one of Iran’s proxies, by claiming that they attempted “to steal religious garbs from the Druze in Lebanon to dress up as Druze clerics and hide their terrorist activity.”
