Israeli ambassador criticizes new agreement between Russia and Iran as 'dangerous for the entire world'
Earlier this week, Israeli ambassador to Russia Simona Halperin criticized a new agreement between Russia and Iran.
“Iran is a country that has openly and publicly stated many times its intention to destroy Israel," Halperin told Russia’s TASS news agency.
“Any cooperation aimed at developing Iran’s ability to realize those intentions, or any agreement intended to strengthen Iran’s economic, strategic, or military capabilities, is dangerous for the entire world and particularly for Israel.”
The 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Iran and Russia was signed on Jan. 17.
TASS reported that the partnership “covers all spheres of bilateral cooperation, including defense, counter-terrorism, energy, finance, transport, industry, agriculture, culture, science and engineering.”
It further noted that while “the signatories pledged not to help aggressors in case of an attack on Russia or Iran,” the agreement “does not imply military assistance in case of an armed attack on one of the parties to the agreement.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he considered the deal a “real breakthrough, creating conditions for the stable and sustainable development of Russia, Iran and the entire region,” AP reported.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian seemed to indicate that the partnership was a reaction to U.S.-led interventions, which both Russia and Iran consider to be Western imperialism.
“They come from another side of the world to make chaos in the region,” he said. “These ties will defuse their plot, definitely.”
Analyzing this renewed alliance between Russia and Iran, Foundation for the Defense of Democracies president Clifford D. May said that is Russia and Iran, along with China and North Korea, that are the imperialists.
“Only the United States can lead the effort to thwart the ambitions of these neo-imperialist enemies of America and the free world,” he said.
