Bahrain claims it thwarted Iranian terror attack, offers few details
Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior announced on Monday the arrests of Iranian terrorists who were planning attacks.
“As part of efforts to protect national security, a proactive security operation in cooperation with the National Intelligence Agency, the CID: Terrorists arrested for plotting terrorist operations against security and civil peace,” the ministry said in a tweet. “Weapons and explosives from Iran were seized from the arrestees who are linked with terrorist groups in Iran.”
No further details were provided on the number of detainees or the nature of the attack.
Though Bahrain is a majority-Shiite nation, its Sunni rulers are allied with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, putting the small island kingdom at odds with Iran. Manama blames Tehran for stirring up opposition during the Arab spring which resulted in protests in 2011.
A similar situation occurred last year when Bahrain said it foiled a “terrorist attack” backed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
