Anti-Defamation League announces Jew hatred and antisemitism doubled on American campuses in 2023
The number of cases involving anti-Jewish and anti-Israel activities has nearly doubled on American college campuses in 2023, according to a new report compiled by the Anti-Defamation League.
So far, the organization has registered 665 anti-Israel cases, almost double the amount of incidents in 2022. The report warns that explicit calls of violence against the Jewish state are becoming increasingly more common in colleges and universities across the United States.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) also noted an intensification of ideologically motivated rhetoric against Zionism in general, the movement that calls for the statehood of the Jewish people in their ancestral homeland, Israel.
Both Jewish and non-Jewish students who support Israel’s right to exist are allegedly increasingly feeling intimidated in an academic environment that is presumably supposed to embrace diversity and tolerance. The troubling trend is reportedly attributed to the growth of the anti-Israel movement across American campuses.
ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt urged American universities to confront the growing wave of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel intolerance.
“Young Jewish students enter college hoping for acceptance. But the disturbing rise in anti-Israel incidents and the vilification of their Jewish identities challenge this sense of belonging. Universities must stand up against this tide,” Greenblatt said.
Antisemitism has consistently been reported to be on the rise in American society for months.
One synagogue in California and another in Florida were recently evacuated after receiving bomb threat calls. Some 50 American synagogues in 13 states have reportedly received bomb threats since July.
Oren Segal, vice president of the ADL’s Center on Extremism, says the current trend points toward a growing number of threats against Jewish American communities.
“Every weekend this network of swatters continues to identify targets and are calling in fake bomb threats, Segal said. “So that number is increasing and will potentially keep increasing.
