Christians around the world praying for Israel can add the name of Israel Defense Forces Gen. Herzi Halevi to their prayer list.

Halevi has been nominated to become the IDF's 23rd chief of staff – rav aluf in Hebrew – early next year. A seasoned commander, intelligence officer and paratrooper, the 54-year-old general is named after his uncle who also fought as a paratrooper in the Six-Day War.

Biblical perspective
Just as Joshua, Joab and Gideon served as mighty men of valor in biblical times who were raised up by God to lead the armies of Israel to defeat her enemies, Herzi Halevi is next in line to lead Israel's army. We pray for God’s wisdom and anointing to be on him, especially at a time when Israel’s top enemy, Iran, is an ever-threatening power with the intent of wiping Israel off the face of the map. May Halevi, as Joshua, be a man of faith and courage who seeks the wisdom of God in all his decisions and actions. Because it was that extraordinary faith of Joshua, after seeking the Lord’s help, which caused the sun to stand still so that the enemy could be defeated, an act which has never been equaled.

Halevi will assume responsibility over 24 generals and brigadier generals who manage the different branches and departments of the IDF.

Married with four children, Halevi began his military career in 1985 when he entered the paratroopers brigade. After commanding a squadron there, he led an elite reconnaissance unit in 2001.

He would be assuming the post as Israel faces the stark possibility of a nuclear Iran in the near future. Iranian leaders have frequently vowed to wipe Israel off the face of the map.

The chief of staff has the most influence on shaping Israeli military policy and recommending to the prime minister and defense minister whether or not the nation should go to war.

"Maj.-Gen. Herzi Halevi is a worthy and natural choice. Herzi is an outstanding and talented officer with considerable experience. I am certain that he will lead the IDF to many significant achievements," Prime Minister Yair Lapid said after Defense Minister Benny Gantz recommended Halevi for the position.

If the appointment is approved, Halevi would replace Aviv Kochavi – to whom he is currently deputy – when he retires.
