VIDEO: Untold story of the IDF unit that liberated Jerusalem in the Six-Day War
“The strength of Israel is in its soul, not in its ammunition.”
In honor of Jerusalem Day, ALL ISRAEL NEWS invites you to watch our exclusive video featuring Gershon Shevach, former IDF officer, as he reveals what it was like serving in the famous Unit 16 – the Israeli army’s urban warfare unit – on the day they liberated Jerusalem during the Six-Day War.
“In every generation there is some nation that wants to destroy us. They don't want to just win the war, they want to kill us,” Shevach says.
Raised in a Zionist family, Shevach describes the emotionally-charged experience of being among the first soldiers in the Old City to reclaim the Western Wall.
“We built an army here and we built a beautiful nation, because the strength of Israel is in its soul, not in its ammunition,” he said.
Jerusalem Day, Yom Yerushalayim in Hebrew, is an Israeli national holiday that commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem and marks the regaining of access to the Old City’s Western Wall following the nation’s Six-Day War victory in June 1967.
Jerusalem’s Western Wall Heritage Foundation is sponsoring other activities throughout Jerusalem Day. For more information, visit their website.
