US plans 2023 Negev Summit for Israel, Arab countries
As Washington puts pressure on Israel’s incoming right-wing government to demonstrate restraint, the United States announced an early 2023 meeting between Israel and its Arab allies in the Negev, Israel’s southern desert region.
Last year’s meeting – called the Negev Forum – brought together Egypt’s foreign minister and foreign ministers from the Abraham Accords signatories – the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco – all of which normalized relations with Israel in 2020.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the U.S. official said that the accords are “near and dear to the heart of Prime Minister Netanyahu, and so I imagine that he wants to continue to see that move forward.”
Next year’s meeting aligns with efforts toward regional projects in the areas of general security, food and water security, energy, health, education and tourism.
