These are the 33 Israeli hostages set to be released by Hamas in the coming 42 days
Israel expects first hostage release to begin on Sunday
After a last minute crisis was resolved, the ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas is set to begin on Sunday, Jan. 19, with the release of the first two to three Israeli hostages.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced on Friday morning that the release will be “implemented according to the planned framework in which the hostages are expected to be released on Sunday.”
The statement cautioned this was still “pending approval by the Security Cabinet and the Government, and the agreement taking effect,” as the Israeli cabinet at the time was still reviewing the details of the agreement reached by the negotiating delegation in Qatar the day before.
During the first 42-day stage of the deal, 33 hostages are set to be released. Israel believes that most of them are still alive but hasn’t received detailed information on their condition from Hamas.
According to Israeli media, when the hostages will be released, they will be received by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops, their families will be updated, and then the PMO will issue an official statement confirming their names, and presumably, their condition.
Israeli media outlets have also published the official list of the 33 names slated to be released. These are mainly the remaining children, women – including IDF soldiers – and the elderly hostages.
The list includes several notable hostages, for example, the Shiri and Yarden Bibas and their two small children.
Other well-known hostages include 20-year-old IDF soldier Naama Levy, Israeli-Russian citizen Alexander Troufanov, the oldest remaining hostage, Shlomo Mansur, U.S. citizen Keith Siegel, as well as Avera Mengistu and Hisham Al Sayed, who have been held hostage since 2014 and 2015, respectively.
