Senior Israeli medical official predicts human and artificial intelligence to shape future of medicine

A cardiologist and AI researcher at Israel’s Beilinson Hospital is well-positioned to assess the future impact of artificial intelligence on medical advancements.

"In an age where advanced technology penetrates every area of ​​our lives, the question arises as to whether artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT can change the world of medicine, and especially the medical decision-making process," stated Dr. Edward Itelman at the Mind the Tech London conference.

"The field of medicine is changing rapidly with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI), which brings with it significant improvements. Today, AI systems manage to pass medical tests, answer medical questions in forums and even provide more professional and sensitive answers than doctors in some cases," Itelman assessed.

While some experts argue that AI technology could eventually replace humans in various sectors, an Israeli researcher contends that in medicine, AI will enhance rather than supplant human intelligence.

"So can AI replace doctors? The answer is no. As technology advances, the line between human and machine capabilities becomes more blurred. However, it seems that in the foreseeable future, artificial intelligence will be used as a decision-support tool for doctors, and not as a replacement for them. The main challenge will be to find the right balance between the technological advantages and the need for humane and empathetic care," Itelman explained.

He emphasized that humans will continue playing a central role in future medicine.

"The ability of artificial intelligence to develop and help in many cases is impressive," he added, "But there is no substitute for human intervention in medical care."

"While artificial intelligence brings great promise for improving medical care, it is not expected to replace the human doctor. Instead, it will change the doctor's role, allowing them to focus more on the human aspects of medicine, using advanced technological tools to make more informed decisions. The future of medicine lies in the successful combination of human intelligence and artificial intelligence," said Itelman.

Israel has become an important player in global medical advances and AI technology despite its small size.

In March, the Israeli start-up company Belong.Life launched an innovative AI app designed to empower cancer patients by offering them advanced support in managing their illness

Israeli medical scientists have also deployed AI to address various heart-related issues.

In July 2023, physicians from the prominent Sheba Medical Center announced the development of an advanced AI-based device to optimize the diagnosis of cardiac issues within a few minutes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been a vocal supporter of AI and strengthening Israel’s position as a leading AI nation.
