Protests turn violent in Lebanon during demonstrations marking one year since devastating port blast
Mass protests have turned deadly in Lebanon as citizens took to the streets to call for justice one year after a devastating explosion rocked the Port of Beirut.
Families of the victims called for justice and transparency in the investigation and had a moment of silence. Other protestors threw rocks at the parliament and clashed with security forces who fired water cannon and tear gas at the demonstrators.
The blast, which took place exactly one year ago today on Aug. 4, 2020, resulted in 218 deaths, 7,500 injuries, 300,000 homeless and $15 billion in property damage.
It is still unknown what caused the two explosions at the city's port where 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate had been stored in a warehouse for six years.
