Palestinian Authority Fatah general says Hamas will fall apart after Trump and Israel 'destroy Iran'
In an interview with the New York Post published on Monday, Mohammad Hamdan, the secretary-general of the Fatah party, which governs the Palestinian Authority, stated that he believes the incoming Trump administration and the current Israeli government intend to “destroy Iran,” after which Hamas will inevitably fall apart.
“We see that Trump and the ruling government in Israel are planning to destroy Iran, so Hamas [followers] will have no other choice than to become Palestinian,” said Hamdan, indicating Hamas does not represent the true interests of the Palestinian people.
“We are confronting Hamas’ ideology,” he argued. “Our problem is with Hamas’ link to regimes outside Palestine.”
Hamdan further criticized Hamas for rejecting international law.
“Hamas rejects international legitimacy, meaning UN resolutions,” he said. “The world cannot accept a situation where a party does not accept international resolutions.”
While criticizing the terror group in Gaza, Hamdan also argued that the rise of Hamas and other Islamist organizations is largely a consequence of American interventionist foreign policy.
“We as Palestinians believe that most of these extremist Islamic groups are produced by America by its effort to create a new Middle East,” he said.
Fatah, a socialist and nationalist party, is headed by Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, the current president of the Palestinian Authority (PA).
Fatah advocates for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
About a week after the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, a report from the PA’s official news agency stated that, in a call with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Abbas condemned Hamas by name.
“The president also stressed that Hamas' policies and actions do not represent the Palestinian people, and the policies, programs and decisions of the (Palestine Liberation Organization) represent the Palestinian people as their sole legitimate representative,” the report said.
Shortly thereafter, however, the language about Hamas was removed, changing the sentence to say the following: “The president also stressed that the policies, programs, and decisions of the PLO represent the Palestinian people as their sole legitimate representative, and not the policies of any other organization.”
The report also stated that Abbas “rejected the methods associated with killing or abusing civilians on both sides, and called for the release of civilians, prisoners and detainees. He reiterated the rejection of violence, adherence to international legitimacy, peaceful popular resistance, and political action as a way to achieve the national goals of freedom and independence.”
Despite these claims, the PA under Abbas’ leadership has consistently maintained its “Martyrs Fund” which, among other things, financially supports the families of Palestinians who have engaged in acts of violent terrorism against Israelis.
