Palestinian and Middle Eastern social media users gloat over Biden’s withdrawal from presidential race
President's legacy called into question over support for Gaza War, statements against Arab leaders
After U.S. President Joe Biden announced his surprise withdrawal from the presidential campaign on Sunday, the reaction across the Middle East was mixed, mostly due to his support for Israel during the Gaza War.
While many Middle Eastern leaders did not officially comment, social media users – particularly vocal Palestinian supporters – were quick to react, often gleefully.
Ramy Abdu, chairman of the Hamas-affiliated Euro-Med Monitor, wrote: “Biden announced his withdrawal from the U.S. presidential race. Yet, for us Palestinians, his name will always be associated with the genocide committed by Israel under his support. To hell with you, Mr. Biden.”
Lima Bustami, head of Euro-Med Monitor’s legal department posted a video of a baby that was allegedly killed in an Israeli airstrike along with the caption, “This is your legacy, Biden.”
An account called Uzair posted to 𝕏, “It's Joeover. Biden is out. The old pig dropped from the presidential race. May Allah drop him in hellfire for being a sellout war criminal as well. Ameen.”
Another Arab account on 𝕏 wrote, “Good Bye Genocide Biden.”
Nour Odeh, a Palestinian activist with significant activity on 𝕏, posted a message condemning Biden’s legacy of “genocide.”
Americans will debate what Joe Biden’s legacy is & they will have many things to consider. In the global south generally, & Palestine most specifically, Biden will go down in infamy as the man who rather than stopping a genocide, enabled, supported, armed, & allowed it to happen. pic.twitter.com/whXwjCYo0q

Another Palestinian supporter, using the name Tamer, said that Biden’s exit would only lead to another “more Zionist and criminal person” taking his place.
“One of the most despicable American presidents and a major participant in the massacre, Holocaust and genocide in Gaza, Biden, announces that he is stepping down from candidacy for the US presidential elections, so that a more Zionist and criminal person can take his place to complete the mission.”
One user even accused Israel of orchestrating Biden's withdrawal, posting, "Israel made Joe Biden step down."
In other areas of the Middle East, social media users mocked Biden for comments he made about various regional leaders.
An account called Sheikh Ibn Baalbek posted a message mocking Biden over his statement that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had to leave. The post contrasted pictures of Biden and Assad.
Arab News columnist Eyad Abu Shakra wrote that “US President Joe Biden stepped down from his party's nomination for president without a single shot.”
He contrasted this with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, who has suppressed a popular uprising since 2011 and is believed to be responsible for the deaths of millions of his own citizens.
In Saudi Arabia, several people contrasted Biden’s promise to make Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman “a pariah” with Biden’s sudden loss of support and withdrawal.
Another Saudi, Saleh bin Kahlah, wrote: “2020: I will make Saudi Arabia a pariah. 2024: The outcast is expelled from the presidential race by his party. Everyone who is hostile to Saudi Arabia will leave or collapse.”
