IDF helicopter part discovered in Syria 50 years after crash
Fifty years after it crashed in Syria, a part of an IDF helicopter has been recovered, the IDF announced on Monday
The rotor head of the crashed SA 321 Super Frelon helicopter was discovered in southern Syria, where Israel currently maintains a limited military presence.
The rotor head, recovered by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) Shaldag unit and the 810th Mountains Regional Brigade, originated from a helicopter that crashed during a rescue mission on April 27, 1974, according to a Times of Israel report.
The 1974 mission was aimed at rescuing paratroopers who were wounded during the continued conflict between Israel and Syria after the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
A tailwind caused the helicopter to collide with the mountainside from where the paratroopers were to be evacuated, resulting in an explosion that claimed the lives of the entire crew.
Among those who perished were “the pilots, Major Golan Levi and Lieutenant Amir Amit, the mechanic sergeants, Sergeant Yaakov Bernheim and Sergeant Yaakov Rol, Unit 669's Major Dr. Achikam Avni Feinstein, and Unit 669 paratrooper Corporal Meir Rosenstroch,” i24 News reported.
The IDF said it searched the area for any other meaningful items that may have been left behind and has since returned the rotor head to Israel.
