Heavy rains raise level of Sea of Galilee
Torrential storms sweep through country. Watch video.
Last week Israel was experiencing an unseasonal heat wave. This week, torrential and even damaging storms and cold weather have swept through the country.
The few rains we have had already this year were enough to bring up the level of the Sea of Galilee (known as Lake Kinneret in Israel) up 2 centimeters, which is crucial. Last year’s record rainy season saw the lake’s levels rise above the red line, for the first time in years.
On Thursday morning, the lake is closer to the upper red line (measuring at 1.175 meters below it) than the lower red line (standing at 3.025 meters above). The upper red line represents maximum capacity.
While rain is always considered a blessing in Israel, the heavy rains caused damage in Ashdod where entire neighborhoods were flooded. In Tel Aviv, beaches were closed due to sewage overflowing into the sea.
The rain is expected to last through Friday.
