Family of a senior Hamas member connected to Sinwar flees to Egypt

Samah Sarag with Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar

The wife and children of Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, Samah Sarag, managed to leave the coastal enclave for Egypt on Tuesday, apparently without Israel's knowledge or approval, as reported on KAN 11 Evening News.

Sarag was also the commander of Hamas' cyber unit operating from Turkey and reported its activities directly to Yahya Sinwar, Hamas' leader in Gaza.

Sarag, himself, has been in hiding since the beginning of the conflict. It is still unclear whether he was killed in an assassination attempt that took place in northern Gaza early on in the fighting.

His family members' successful escape from Gaza without Israel's knowledge raises questions about the IDF's control over those leaving the Strip through the Rafah border crossing. It also presents the possibility that Hamas will smuggle out its senior military and political figures through the crossing into Egypt.

A list of those leaving through the Rafah border crossing - Sarag's family mentioned in rows 41-44.

Two weeks ago, Ismail Abu Omar, an Al-Jazeera journalist who served as an officer in Hamas' military wing -and even participated in the October 7 massacre in an attack on the IDF in the Strip - was injured. He managed to leave Gaza crossing through Rafah into Egypt on his way to Qatar without Israel's approval.
