First rocket fired from Gaza to Israel since May conflict
For the first time in nearly three months since the 11-day war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip in May, at least one rocket was fired from the coastal enclave into Israel.
Sirens were heard in Sderot and other Israeli cities in the South around Gaza.
The rocket was reportedly shot down by Israel's Iron Dome defense system. No injuries were reported.
“I hope and expect that the State of Israel knows how to ensure the deterrence that was put in place after the operation” in May, said Ofir Liebstein, mayor of the Sha’ar Hanegev regional council.
He continued: “Any launch, even if it is intercepted, interrupts our daily lives, especially when it is at a time when children are in summer activities and not at home with their parents. Fortunately and unfortunately, the educational teams in our region are experienced in dealing with such things and they are now helping children get back to their routines in the best and healthiest way possible.”
