America may mint a coin of former Israeli premier Golda Meir in honor of Israel’s 75th anniversary
An American bi-partisan initiative has introduced the Prime Minister Golda Meir Commemorative Coin Act, which would mint a coin in honor of Israel’s legendary first and only female prime minister and the State of Israel’s 75th anniversary.
Golda Meir was one of the world’s first female leaders. The effort to create a Golda Meir coin requires a two-thirds majority in both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.
Bobby Rechnitz, a California-based philanthropist who chairs the initiative, said the Golda Meir coin project was designed to strengthen bi-partisan support for the Jewish state.
“The initiative will offer all Washington lawmakers, especially the seven new senators and 74 new House representatives, the opportunity to reaffirm their support for Israel,” said Rechnitz.
He said Meir is a powerful symbol of progress, female success and unity against all odds.
“Golda smashed every single glass ceiling to become a role model for young women everywhere. She was a trailblazer for Zionism, equality, feminism and Tikkun Olam,” Rechnitz stated, referring to the Jewish fundamental concept of repairing or restoring the world.
“At a time when we see so much political polarization in both countries, we should all be able to rally behind the legacy of Golda Meir as a symbol of unity and progress,” Rechnitz said.
Meir is also a powerful symbol of the unique American-Israeli relationship, according to Rechnitz.
“Golda Meir was the personification of the Israel-America relationship. Raised in Milwaukee, she paved her way to the Holy Land and became one of the founding mothers of Israel,” he said.
Known as the original Iron Lady, ahead of Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, Ukraine-born Golda Meir has also become a symbol of freedom among some Ukrainians who are currently fighting against Russian invaders.
