Israelis should prepare for a fourth dose of the COVID vaccine in a few months, nation’s coronavirus czar said according to the Times of Israel.

Israel was the first country to begin administering a booster shot of the vaccine in mid- July. Other countries are expected to follow soon, but the World Health Organization said there is insufficient data to support administering a third dose, especially while some countries haven’t received their first round.

Israel is one of the world’s most vaccinated nations and yet is amid its fourth wave of the pandemic with a record-high number of daily infections last week.

So far 2.5 million Israelis have received the booster shot.

"Given that the virus is here and will continue to be here, we also need to prepare for a fourth injection," Prof. Salman Zarka said.

"This is our life from now on, in waves," he said.

According to Zarka, the new booster – available by late 2021 or early 2022 – should be modified to offer better protection against new variants of the virus but did not specify when the fourth shot would be rolled out.
